Talisman Pendants
Talisman boxes contain written verses of the Quran to protect the wearer, to give strength or to ensure fertility. At the age of 17, a Tuareg girl receives from her mother a tcherot and a khomissar pendant (see above) as part of her ascension into womanhood. They are also worn by men in certain Tuareg tribes usually affixed to their turban or around the neck.
This fine old box pendant is beautifully incised with geometric designs. This Talisman box was worn by both men and women of the Kel Air tribe, Niger.
