Description: Mud cloth is made by both the Dogon and Bamana peoples of Mali. Although the techniques and materials the two tribes use are practically identical the cloth made by the Dogon is usually smaller and displays a more highly developed sense of design and composition, some Dogon mudcloths contain complex borders and smaller patterns that testify to the pride in workmanship that many of these Dogon artisans have. The name mudcloth comes from the black dye which is obtained by fermenting mud in a clay pot that is stored under water for half a year. The base cloth is made from thick hand-woven cotton strips approximately 3 to 4 inches wide that are sewn together by hand to form a larger piece. The end result is a cloth that delights the senses with it's thick textured feel and subtlety varied organic dyes.
