These beaded aprons are from the Mandara mountain region of
northern Cameroon. These well made aprons were worn by Fali
women for special occasions as part of a traditional
costume. Designs would typically indicate marital status and
clan affiliations. These "cache sex" (to cover the sex) come
in a dazzling array of color and design combinations. Each
apron is woven on a loom by bead weaving specialist and
great care is given to each individual piece. Aprons coming
from the same village or clan will have similar designs. The
designs serve as a tribal emblem and the triangular motifs
are said to be symbolic of the feminine principal.
