Here we have
an old ceremonial cola nut bowl collected from Ibo land. In
this part of Africa it was customary to be offered cola nuts
when visiting. This object was kept in the compound to be
presented to the honored guest, cola nuts were arranged on
the surface to be dipped in a hot sauce that was kept under
the lid in the receptacle, the lid could be placed upside
down to make another container. This is a particularly
desirable example with a figurative lid consisting of two
well worn encrusted miniature Ibo masks facing each other
symbolizing the host and his guest. On one side is a peg
where the nuts would be placed before being ceremonially
split in half then chewed giving the lucky guest a brief
caffeine high.
