Here we have
for your consideration a rare late 19th c Indian folk
carving from the region of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
Statues such as these were made for people of modest means
to be placed inside homes to aid in the attainment of
spiritual and material benefits. This statue is a
representation of a female deity, which one I know not, she
is beautifully rendered in the the local style using a hard
wood, probably teak, and has received many offerings of
turmeric mixed with lime powder where the cast mark is
located in the middle of the forehead. Notice that the
facial features have been rubbed flat from repeated contact.
Measures 10 1/2" tall with the base. Measures 10 1/2"
tall. Excellent condition.
