A Makonde
face mask with hat. Comes with the cloth head cover still
attached and custom mounted on a mahogany base. Some cracks
and termite damage under nose. Measures 19" tall including
stand. This is a Lipiko mask used in ceremony to initiate
young Makonde boys into manhood.
The Makonde people live in the coastal highland regions of
southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. There economy is
based on agriculture with corn, sorghun and cassava being
the main crops.
