Iron working, like other other types of metal working, is always done by men. Iron working appeared in sub-Saharan Africa in the first millennium BC. Iron is first smelted from ore and then transformed through a forging process by the smith. The primary tools used in forging ore are the hammer and anvil. The hot metal is held with pincers and then hammered into the desired shape. The blacksmith occupies a revered position in many African societies. Perhaps the ability to control fire and manipulate dangerous forces heighten this reverence.
