DescriptionThis is a Leopard society textile from the Cross River region. Cloths like this one are used by the Ngbe men's society Leopard cult which functions primarily as an agent of social control, it was also concerned with controlling witchcraft. In the distant past the society had a fearsome reputation due to the alleged cannibalistic practices of it's members. The technique used to make this textile is stitch and dye, it is a labor intensive process that involves sewing in all the designs, immersing in indigo and then unbinding the stitches.
